Transitional…A Perfect Mix – Designed by Peter Whitten

Contemporary with elements of classic style – this brownstone elegantly redefines and modernizes traditional living. A transitional home marries at least two design styles in a way that seems coherent and purposeful. This home does just that.

COLORS & PATTERNS
Burnt oranges, rich mustards, cool-toned grey and off-white play up this home in a spectacular way. With the warm brights being used strategically, nothing feels overwhelming but it creates an electricity that charges the space beautifully. The rug used in the great room is a binding agent that works well to express all of the colors of that room in one glance. The powder and laundry rooms are fantastic spaces – using loud yellow wakes up these less used spaces. White marble adorns the master bath – creating a very airy and spa-like retreat. The master suite is calm and collected versus the rest of the home.

DETAILS
Elements from industrial style are a surprise addition – metal on the stairs and the architectural addition of the skylight. The beauty of transitional style is that the rules are not fixed, the homeowner has the ability to express different elements of particular styles to define the space to their liking. The home feels lived in and curated, and to that end, personal. The artwork is selected carefully, as it does not overwhelm the space – just belongs within it seamlessly. TIP – The canvas in the living room actually inspired the entire home’s color palette, find something you love and try this out in your space.

FURNITURE
Matching contemporary style sofas with curved bright chairs provide ample living room seating – and asymmetrical space. The cocktail table is mirrored, allowing light to bounce around and enhance the room. There is a simple seating area for dining tucked next to the stairway, contemporary style chairs with a roundtable. Two patterned barstools sit at the island. Behind the island is a casual seating area with a television, with a traditional sofa in a blue geometric pattern. The master bedroom features an upholstered traditional king size bed, but across from this is a very contemporary seating area with clean-lined sherpa chairs and a small acrylic table. The loft area upstairs features additional seating to one side and a slim adjustable desk against the opposite wall – this creates an open concept office space. Overall, this transitional style brownstone is casual, refined and bright.
